This May marked 15 years since I photographed my first ever wedding and I’ve photographed over 400 weddings. I’m so grateful to every couple that has trusted me to capture their day.

I live in Edinburgh in a wee Victorian cottage that I’m renovating with my husband Chris! We have a beagle called Alfred who is an absolute character. I got married last year so I’m totally here to help with all the wedding planning advice ✨(photos 2 & 3 by @caroweissphoto & photo 8 by @inthenameoflovephotography )

I’ve always loved photography, I was the kid who at 7 begged her dad to show her how to use his Pentax film camera. They then went and bought me a point and shoot (which I still have!!).

As I teenager I learnt how to shoot and develop b&w film in the darkroom. I then photographed lots of bands and live music photography. I’m still a massive music fan and love going to concerts and festivals.

I then moved into burlesque and fashion photography before I fell in love with weddings.

I’m that rare breed of photographer who also loves being in front of the camera. I was a model and burlesque dancer in my 20s, which gives me a super unique perspective of working with and directing people in front of my camera. (Photo 4 by @charlotte_ashleyfitness on film )

I’ve also done some acting / extras work with some highlights being season 2 of outlander and One Day on Netflix! (Photo 7 from @outlander_starz & 6 BTS on One Day)

I’m a huge lover out the outdoors and a massive fitness gal! Climbing hills and lifting weights makes me happy 🙂

Last year I rediscovered my love of analogue photography. From my parents old Pentax cameras to my more modern 1990s cameras, I’m never happier than when shooting film (photo 10 by @julietarabadanph )

Earlier this month I had the joy of capturing this beautiful day in my hometown of Edinburgh. There’s something magical about how Edinburgh looks in winter, the warm lights complimenting the grey stonework of the buildings. The soft winter light, the cold days and the hit of warmth when you go back inside.

Olivia and Jake love having photobooth photos together so I was soooo buzzing about taking them to @stillsautomat.edinburgh eeeaakkk!!!! Swipe to see some photobooth fun!

It was an honour taking them round some of my favourite photo spots around the royal mile too ✨

Post ceremony cocktails at @houseofgodshotel is always a good idea 🍸 I just love the dark & moody interiors in there.

Still not over the most magical few days of creativity in Poland last week for @ninaanddarek ‘s @nostalgia_workshop. Their artistry as photographers and their love and styling they put into the workshop was is just incredible. I’ve always loved the vintage aesthetic and old historical buildings and oh my gosh I was so in love ✨

At the start of this year I scribbled on a post-it note “authenticity, inspiration & intentionality”. I wanted to bring all of these things into my work this year. Instagram for a long time felt to me like I was seeing the same images over and over again.

I wanted to really push myself creatively and feel like I was creating work that aligned with me. It connected with the reasons why I had started taking photographs.

That’s been something I’ve really deep dived into whilst working with a branding designer and I’m about to start with a copywriter on my website copy. Can’t wait to share the finished results!!!

In a wedding industry where everything looks the same, @ninaanddarek are just automatically theirselves and encourage others to do the same. I have so much love for them and that.

I’ve spoken a lot online and to other photographers this year about how important it is to step away from instagram (& Pinterest) and find your own inspiration. Create work that is authentic to you as a photographer and artist. I’m so excited to see how my work progresses next year as I keep pushing myself ✨🎞️

Failing is part of the creative process. So often on social media you only see the end product, the shiny highlights of the best.

What we learn from our failures is more important than our success. Making mistakes and failing along the way ultimately makes you a better artist and creative.

This time last year I bought my first ever medium format film camera, the Pentax 645N. I started my photography journey as a teenager on film but had only ever used 35mm.

I thought it would be an easy picking up medium format. I was comfortable with 35mm and the camera had auto focus. I was wrong, and I failed a lot.

I struggled to load the camera for the first 5 rolls, I messed up the metering, the auto focus system didn’t work properly, I manual focused and completely missed the focus. I failed over and over again.

I could have given up and told myself I wasn’t good enough but I kept going. There was magic in the failures, the imperfections had soul and feeling. Something that was my own creative process that couldn’t be replicated by anyone else. I got more comfortable with the camera and began to master it.

It got me thinking about all the messed up rolls of film from when I was a teenager. Not being able to use above 1600 iso in early DSLRs as the digital noise was so bad. The struggles, mistakes and learning along the way shaped who I am as a photographer today.

As technology moves forward, people are starting their photography journey on mirrorless cameras that make the process of taking a photo so easy. Instagram is filled with identical photos, reels telling you how to create what someone else has created. It all just feels the same.

Let’s all embrace the failures, learn slower and create our own authentic viewpoint of the world.

The weather threw everything at us this day… strong winds & rain, spells of bright sunshine, yet more wind and rain. They were both absolute superstars embracing the weather for a magical romantic photoshoot.

Storytelling with hands ✨

One of the things I always look for when photographing is the way that hands tell a story. The way someone touches or holds their partner, a hug and hand squeeze from someone close to you. The nervous tension, the loose joyous moments, hands are such a key storytelling element.

When photographing portraits, hand placement is something simple that can elevate a photo. I always like hands to feel elegant, graceful and soft.

I have a background as a dancer, I alway remember my ballet teacher pushing the importance of hand placement. It’s something that’s lead me through both my life as a dancer and a photographer.
